Free Spirit

Free Spirit

On several occasions I’ve been told that I am a “Free Spirit.”

I guess we all have some understanding of what that phrase means but overall it’s not really something people say about everybody, it seems only to be applied to those of us dwelling somewhat on the fringe.

The last time this was said  about me was by a contractor working on a farm I was staying at this past spring on the edge of the Black Hills in South Dakota. This time, it got me thinking… If I am a “free spirit”, what is that saying about everybody else? Does this mean that others are NOT free spirits? Are their spirits trapped? Subdued? Enslaved? Dead? Departed?

I cannot imagine having a “non-free spirit” – what does that even mean? Is the spirit that is free a threat to the status quo we’ve designed as two-leggeds?
